Equality Commission for Northern Ireland has launched a Public Consultation on a Draft Code of Practice: Racial Equality in the Provision of Housing and Accommodation.
The Commission will be issuing this Code of Practice under Article 45 (1) (c) and (d) of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. The Order as amended by Race Relations Order (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 outlaws discrimination on grounds of colour, race, nationality or ethnic or national origin. The Order makes racial discrimination unlawful in employment, in the provision of goods, facilities and services, in education, and in the management of housing and accommodation or the disposal of premises.
The Draft Code of Practice gives practical guidance for housing and accommodation providers, within both the public and private sectors, on the law and good practice. The Code of Practice can also provide guidance for individuals. The Code does not, itself, impose any legal obligations. To obtain a copy of the Draft Code of Practice please contact the Commission using the methods given below or download it at www.equalityni.org.
The Commission intends to hold a series of Focus Groups to obtain in-person feedback from representatives from race and housing organisations on:
Equality House, Belfast. Wednesday, 21st March 2007 and Friday, 23rd March 2007.
The events will commence at 10:00am with tea and coffee for a 10:30am start. A sandwich lunch will be provided at 12:30pm.
