From 1 October 2006, it has been unlawful for employers and others to discriminate on grounds of age in the areas of employment and training, including vocational training and further and higher education.
The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2006 implements in Northern Ireland the age strand of EU Directive 2000/78 which establishes a general framework for equal treatment in employment and vocational training. The Age Regulations apply to all employers, regardless of size, and all vocational training providers (including Further and Higher Education Institutions). They protect all employees (and former employees in some circumstances), job seekers and all vocational trainees across all age groups.For a summary of the key provisions of the Age Regulations click here.
Under the Age Regulations, the Equality Commission has a responsibility to provide information and advice to employers and training providers and to those who may be discriminated against. The Commission has produced the following guidance:
