'Heavy Load', award-winning feature documentary, a film about a group of people with learning disabilities who start a band, is being at Queens Film Theatre in Belfast, from Tuesday 21st through Thursday 23rd Oct, (showing: 6:45pm)
Made up of musicians with and without learning disabilities, ‘Heavy Load’ is Lewes' answer to the Ramones. Shot over two years, the film is a comedy of conflicting ambitions capturing the sweat and romance of playing in the band. Click here for QFT’s full description.
The film was Mark Kermode's Film of the Week on 5Live, and has been described by The Guardian as "uproariously funny and moving"; "a delightful odyssey" by Empire, and "an amazingly personal, insightful and joyous movie" says Bizarre. It also won the Audience Award at the Britdoc Film Festival.
A parallel campaign – Stay Up Late – attempts to address the issue of people with learning disabilities having to leave events / gigs early because of staff shifts finishing times. The aim of the campaign is to encorage better communication and rota planning, by involving residents in these processes.
