Services: Substance Use training

Two Staff are currently manage the substance use training element of our training and development programme.

Chris Rintoul is the Development Training Officer with CHNI, a post is funded by EDACT & Public Health Agency. Kathy Henry provides Chris with much-needed administrative support.

Chris's role is to develop and deliver training on substance misuse issues for staff working in the homelessness sector (hostel staff, housing workers, hostel staff etc.).  Likewise, he delivers training to staff working in the substance misuse/addiction treatment sector on homelessness issues.

Some of the training leads to an accredited qualification at Open College Network level 3. Other courses are on specialist topics such as overdose/resuscitation and safer injecting. These courses are complimented by cross sectoral placements, where staff can work in the other sector, either homelessness or treatment for a period of time.

Chris also organises seminars on topics such as Harm Reduction and Homelessness. All the courses/services described are offered free to staff working within the Eastern Board area.

The aim of the training is to improve the interface between the 2 sectors: to make the referral pathways between the various agencies clearer; to equip staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective services to homeless substance misusers; and to increase tolerance towards this group of service users.
