Representation to the Social Security Advisory Committee: Housing Benefit (Amendment) Regulations 2011

Type:  Consultation on proposed Housing Benefit (Amendment Regulations) 2011 - closed 17 June
Lead: Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC)
Relevance: proposed changes to Shared Accommodation Rate for Housing Benefit.

please find below links to organisational and fora responses to the SSAC request for evidence re. Housing Benefit (Amendment) Regulations 2011.

This will change the definition of a “young individual” for housing benefit purposes, so that it would in future cover people under the age of 35, rather than 25 as it does now. The effect would be to limit the award of Housing Benefit for single people up to age 35 to the shared accommodation rate.

Should you wish to share your organisational response to this (or any other consultation), please contact George Quinn - 90246440, info@chni.org.uk)

Voluntary Sector Housing Policy Forum letter to MLAs re. Shared Accommodation Rate changes

Earlier this month, the Voluntary Sector Housing Policy Forum sent a letter, on behalf of Council for the Homeless Northern Ireland and other leading organisations committed to tackling homelessness, poverty, and social exclusion across Northern Ireland, to our local MLAs. This letter is printed below.

The letter outlines the sector’s collective concerns regarding the changes in Shared Accommodation Rate. We believe the extension of the age range from 25 to 35 years of age is a pressing issue which warrants the Assembly's urgent attention.
