HAW is an week of social, educational and awareness raising events organised annually across the country to highlight the issue of homelessness across Northern Ireland, and to mark the continued efforts of organisations, staff, and service users working in the sector.
Originally arranged to mark the 40th anniversary of ‘Cathy Come Home’ - Ken Loach's powerful docudrama dealing with a young family's journey into homelessness - Homelessness Awareness Week (HAW) is in it’s twelfth year.
This year, HAW runs (inclusively) from Friday 30 November to Saturday 8 December 2018.
HAW is a sectoral wide week of activities, and whilst no one organisation is central to event planning / co-ordination, each year, we take an active role in encouraging participation, promoting HAW events, and organise several events of our own, usually in conjunction with members.
HAW aims to…
Increase public awareness about the nature of homelessness;
Challenge stereotypes surrounding homelessness;
Highlight the work of the homelessness sector;
Build links between service users, services, and the public.
Keep up to date with events planned during HAW 2018: visit our HAW Facebook and Twitter pages, and closer to the time, a calendar of events will appear on this page.
As part of HAW 2018, the sector is calling for an urgent funding increase for the Supporting People programme. Here are some campaign materials and press release template for your organisational / project use during HAW.
